Benefit-Based Incentives Remain Top Draws for Health and Wellness Participation

While benefit-based incentives, like health insurance premium reductions, generate significant employee interest, gift cards and even cash continue to motivate employees to take better care of themselves, according to market research from the Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN).

Healthcare companies have grown increasingly creative in their use of economic and benefit-based incentives to drive engagement and participation in health and wellness programs, says HIN.

In its third annual Health and Wellness Incentives Use e-survey, HIN captured the expanding focus, utilization and impact of health and wellness incentives in the healthcare industry, from types of incentives offered to methods for identifying individuals for incentive programs and reasons for providing incentives.

Survey results revealed the growing interest in offering incentives for participation in health improvement programs and the continued popularity of incentives for completion of health risk assessments (HRAs).

Survey Highlights

  • Thirty-one percent of respondents currently offer incentives for participation in disease management programs, and 27 percent say they will do so in the next 12 months.
  • Overall, about 70 percent of responding organizations currently offer incentives and rewards for participation in health improvement programs.
  • Benefit-based incentives generate higher participation/engagement levels than financial incentives like gift cards, say 52 percent of respondents.
  • More than half — 53 percent — reduce health insurance premiums as an incentive.
  • Seventeen percent say disease management is the area most responsive to health and wellness incentives.
  • Gift cards are offered as incentives by 47 percent of the population.
  • Nearly 80 percent of responding organizations said they did not penalize their employees for health risk factors or non-compliance.
  • 61 percent of responding organizations plan to offer incentive and rewards plans for health program participation in the next 12 months.
  • Roughly 74 percent of responding organizations plan to offer smoking cessation programs next year.
